Kellys reign starts with a win.   31/12/2017

O'Byrne Cup

Westmeath 1-13

Laois 1-12

Colin Kelly's reign as football manger got off to a perfect start as 5 points from the excellent Luke Loughlin and a first half goal from James Dolan helped his side survive a brave comeback from Laois.

Westmeath led 1-7 to 0-4 at the break and looked to be heading for a comfortable win before a Paul Kingston goal with 10 to play brought the visitors back into the game.

They could have snatched a draw but some great defending kept them at bay.

Standout performers aswell as the returning Loughlin included Kilbeggan's Nigel Scally, Maryland pair Kieran Martin and Callum McCormack and Finbar Coyne(whos cameo off the bench proved crucial as he scored 2 brilliant points)from Miltownpass.

These sides meet again next Sunday in Stradbally with anything but a Laois win meaning we'll qualify for the semi-finals.
